HEADTEACHER'S WELCOME

Welcome to Kinlochleven High School

Starting at a new school has always filled me, in equal parts, with excitement and apprehension.
Every school is different, with slightly different routines, structures and ways of doing things. As
Head teacher I want to make sure that you know you are all welcomed, whether a new pupil, a new
parent or a new member of staff. As a new and valued member of our team, we are keen to support
you and to capitalise on your learning, energy, and enthusiasm.

At Kinlochleven High School we aim to be inclusive, determined, patient, generous and
compassionate and to build confidence, offering high standards of teaching and learning across a
broad curriculum. Our curriculum, based on the recommendations of Curriculum for Excellence,
offers pupils the opportunity to develop skills and abilities across a wide range of subject areas and
extra-curricular activities.

We offer a wide range of social, creative, cultural and sporting activities. Pupils, throughout their
time in the school, benefit from a range of opportunities for out of school learning. Through
activities like the Outward Bound program, the S3 expedition to Norway and the Duke of Edinburgh
Award, as well as the support throughout their school career to take part in volunteering, recognised
by the SALTIRE Award, pupils gain tremendously in terms of developing confidence and an ethic of
team work.

We are fortunate, in the school, to have an active and supportive Parent Council. New parent
members will be warmly welcomed. Dates of meetings are advertised via the school website and
mobile phone app. This partnership of teachers, parents and the wider community is an essential
strand in helping our pupils to achieve their full potential.

Pupils too can have an input into the development of the school via the Pupil Council which
represents their views on various aspects of school life. In the past the pupil council were
instrumental in agreeing the school uniform policy and suggested amendments to discipline policies
and curricular structures. Pupils’ views are treated with respect and taken in to account when
decisions are made.

Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress through reports and also through bi-annual
Parents’ Evenings. Pupils also work on producing a profile which reflects on their progress in school
as well as providing a way of recording your child’s wider achievements. A two-way flow of
communication is a key aspect of the partnership between home and school, and members of the
school community are encouraged to contact the school – at any time – if a problem should arise or
if you require further information.

We look forward to getting to know you in the years ahead and wish you a rewarding association
with Kinlochleven High School
